Kenya Safari Packages Across the Parks, Rift Valley & Coast

Compare Sun & Safari Kenya safari packages by the destination, number of days, wildlife objective, accommodation, transport and coast extension you actually need. Choose focused 2- and 3-day safaris, 5-day regional itineraries, 7-day bush-and-beach travel, or longer 10-, 12- and 14-day Kenya circuits covering the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo, Samburu, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, Ol Pejeta and the Indian Ocean coast.

The Basics

What Is a Kenya Safari Package, Exactly?

Before comparing itineraries, it helps to understand what the words actually mean — and how they connect.

A Kenya safari package is a pre-built itinerary that bundles together several things that would otherwise need to be arranged separately: park or reserve entry permits, a 4×4 safari vehicle and driver-guide, accommodation at a lodge, tented camp, or beach property, meals, and the road or air transfers that connect one location to the next. The word “safari” itself comes from the Swahili word for journey, and a Kenya safari is best understood as a journey between specific, named places rather than a single destination — which is why our packages are described by the parks and regions they visit rather than by a generic label.

Kenya’s protected wildlife areas fall into three legal categories, and the difference matters when you are choosing a package. National reserves, such as the Masai Mara, are managed by county governments and allow a wider range of accommodation styles inside their boundaries. National parks, such as Amboseli, Tsavo East and Tsavo West, Lake Nakuru, and Nairobi National Park, are managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service under stricter conservation rules. Private conservancies, such as those bordering the Masai Mara and the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Laikipia, are run in partnership with local Maasai landowners and typically limit vehicle numbers per sighting, which is why conservancy-based packages often feel less crowded than reserve-based ones. Our Maasai Mara conservancies guide explains how these community conservancies fit around the reserve itself.

Every package on this page names the specific parks, reserves, or coastal towns it visits, the accommodation type (lodge, tented camp, or beach resort), the number of game drives, and how travellers move between locations — by road in a safari vehicle, or by light aircraft on routes such as Masai Mara to Diani Beach. This is deliberate: search intent for “Kenya safari packages” is rarely about price alone. It is about matching a specific park, a specific number of days, and a specific combination of bush and beach to a traveller’s dates and interests. The sections below are organised around exactly those variables — duration, region, and combination — so you can find the itinerary that matches what you are actually looking for, whether that is a short 2-day Tsavo East safari or a full 14-day circuit from northern Kenya to the coast.

Choose by Travel Goal

Which Kenya Safari Package Fits Your Trip?

The right package is determined by the places you want to see, the number of nights available, the type of wildlife you want to prioritise, and whether the trip ends on the coast.

First Kenya Safari

Start with the classic southern circuit if this is your first visit. The Masai Mara provides predator-rich savannah and migration-season opportunities; Amboseli adds elephants and Mount Kilimanjaro; Tsavo adds a large, geographically different protected landscape. A 7- to 10-day route gives enough time to experience more than one ecosystem without turning the holiday into continuous road transfers.

Short Safari

A short Kenya safari package should concentrate on one principal wildlife area rather than attempt to cross the country. The 2-day Tsavo East safari is useful for travellers already at the coast or with limited time. A 3-day Amboseli package gives more time for repeated game drives and Kilimanjaro viewing.

Big Five Priority

If the main objective is a broad Big Five search, compare the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo and Ol Pejeta rather than choosing by scenery alone. The reserve, parks and conservancy models differ, so the package should identify where the accommodation is located, how many game drives are scheduled and which fees are included.

Elephant Safari

Choose Amboseli when elephants and the Mount Kilimanjaro landscape are central to the trip. The park’s open plains and wetland areas create a different photographic setting from Tsavo’s red-earth landscape. The Amboseli Elephant Safari with Kilimanjaro Views is the most direct product match for this intent.

Migration Safari

A migration-focused Kenya safari package should place the Masai Mara at the centre of the itinerary and allocate enough nights for changing herd movements. The usual Kenya migration period is approximately July to October, but no operator can guarantee a particular river crossing on a particular day. See the Great Migration guide before selecting dates.

Bush & Beach

A Kenya safari and beach package combines wildlife with recovery time on the Indian Ocean. The most direct version is the 7-Day Bush & Beach route from the Masai Mara to Diani. Longer trips can use the coast as a substantial second half rather than a single final night.

Duration Guide

2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 12 or 14 Days? Match Nights to Objectives

Duration changes what can be experienced without excessive driving. More days should add ecosystems or depth, not simply more transfer time.

2 days: A two-day safari is a focused short break. It works particularly well for Tsavo East because the park fits naturally with the Nairobi–Mombasa corridor. It is not the right structure for a traveller who wants to combine the Masai Mara, Amboseli and the coast; those destinations are too far apart for a useful two-day circuit. The 2-Day Tsavo East Safari is therefore best understood as a focused park experience or a coast add-on.

3 days: Three days and two nights is the minimum practical length for many single-destination safari packages. The 3-Day Maasai Mara Classic provides time for arrival, multiple game-drive periods and departure. The 3-Day Amboseli National Park follows the same logic but changes the wildlife and landscape emphasis toward elephants, wetlands and Mount Kilimanjaro.

5 days: Five days can support a two-region safari with a meaningful amount of game-viewing time, or a specialist northern route. The 5-Day Northern Kenya Safari is designed around Samburu and Laikipia rather than trying to reproduce the southern circuit. The 5-Day Rift Valley Lakes Circuit changes the experience again by connecting Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru and adding walking, boating, birding and rhino-focused wildlife viewing.

7 days: Seven days is long enough to combine a principal safari destination with a substantial coast extension. The signature 7-Day Bush & Beach itinerary links the Masai Mara and Diani, using air transfer to reduce the road distance. It is particularly relevant to travellers searching for a Kenya safari and beach package rather than a safari-only holiday.

10 days: A 10-day Kenya safari package can cover several major ecosystems without requiring every day to be a transfer day. The 10-Day Grand Kenya Safari is aimed at travellers who want greater geographic coverage, with the route built around the relationship between the Rift Valley and southern Kenya’s wildlife areas.

12 days: Twelve days creates room for a more balanced bush-and-beach itinerary. The 12-Day Safari & Beach Leisure, Full Kenya is suited to travellers who want safari time and coast time to feel like two complete parts of one holiday rather than a safari followed by a token beach stay.

14 days: A 14-day Kenya itinerary is appropriate when the traveller wants northern Kenya, central Rift Valley areas, southern wildlife parks and the coast in one journey. The 14-Day Grand Kenya Circuit: North to Coast is the broadest route in the supplied collection. Its value comes from landscape and ecological contrast: arid northern reserves, highland and lake environments, savannah parks and the Indian Ocean coast.

Compare Before Booking

Kenya Safari Packages Side by Side

Price is only one variable. Compare destination, duration, accommodation, transport, activities and included fees before choosing an itinerary.

Package TypeMain DestinationBest ForTypical Logic
2-Day SafariTsavo EastShort breaks and coast add-onsConcentrate game drives in one large park
3-Day SafariMasai Mara or AmboseliFirst-time short safariTwo nights with repeated wildlife-viewing periods
5-Day SafariNorthern Kenya or Rift ValleySpecialist landscapes and speciesCombine two connected areas or focus on one region
7-Day Bush & BeachMasai Mara + DianiSafari and beach holidaysWildlife first, coast second, with air transfer
10-Day CircuitCentral and southern KenyaBroad first-time Kenya tripSeveral ecosystems without a coast extension
12-Day Safari + BeachKenya + Indian OceanBalanced leisure and safariMore coast time and slower overall pacing
14-Day Grand CircuitNorth to CoastMaximum geographic varietyMultiple ecosystems connected into one route

For travellers comparing Kenya safari tour packages, this distinction matters because two itineraries with the same number of days can produce very different experiences. A three-day Mara safari and a three-day Amboseli safari have the same duration but different wildlife priorities. A five-day northern itinerary and a five-day Rift Valley circuit also represent different travel objectives. Package selection is therefore a matching exercise: destination entity → wildlife or activity objective → number of nights → transport method → accommodation location → total cost.

Pricing & Value

How Much Do Kenya Safari Packages Cost?

Safari pricing is the combined result of park fees, accommodation, vehicle use, guiding, transport, season and the number of travellers sharing the cost.

What Drives the Price?

A Kenya safari cost is not simply the nightly rate of a lodge. The quotation can include protected-area entry fees, accommodation, meals, safari vehicle and guide, fuel, transfers, flights where applicable, and itinerary coordination. The season also affects accommodation and air costs. Migration-period Masai Mara travel generally carries stronger demand than lower-demand periods, while festive dates can also affect availability and pricing.

When comparing affordable Kenya safari packages, check what has been removed to create the lower price. A cheaper quote may use a different accommodation category, shared transport, fewer included activities, different park-entry treatment, or additional costs paid locally. A genuine like-for-like comparison uses the same number of nights, same destination, same meal basis, same vehicle arrangement and same fee inclusions.

Per Person vs Total Trip Cost

Published safari rates are commonly expressed per person, often based on two people sharing accommodation. That means the total booking changes with group size and room configuration. Solo travellers may have a single supplement, while children sharing with parents can have different rates depending on age and accommodation rules.

Transport is another major variable. A private vehicle for a couple offers control over the daily schedule and photography stops but distributes the vehicle cost across fewer passengers. A shared safari can reduce the per-person transport cost while introducing fixed departure arrangements. The appropriate choice depends on whether price, privacy, flexibility or photography time is the main priority.

For a direct commercial comparison, open the individual itinerary pages and the matching products rather than treating this overview as a single price list. The Sun & Safari shop contains the bookable products, while Plan Your Trip is the route for a quotation when the standard itinerary needs changes. This is particularly useful when combining packages because duplicated transfers, unnecessary return journeys and mismatched accommodation nights can otherwise inflate the total.

Where You Stay

Lodges, Tented Camps & Beach Resorts

Accommodation location changes the practical quality of a Kenya safari package. A camp close to the wildlife area reduces transfer time and makes early game drives easier. A property outside the protected area can sometimes offer different facilities or pricing, but the daily drive into the park becomes part of the itinerary. When comparing a Masai Mara safari package, ask where the camp is relative to the reserve entrance or the conservancy and how that location affects the first and last game drives.

In Amboseli, accommodation with views toward Mount Kilimanjaro can make the mountain part of the stay rather than something seen only during a game drive. In Tsavo, the distinction between East and West changes the surrounding terrain: Tsavo East is associated with open plains, the Galana River and red-dust landscapes, while Tsavo West adds volcanic scenery, Mzima Springs and the Chyulu-adjacent terrain. In Samburu and Laikipia, lodge location is tied to river corridors, conservancy boundaries and the arid northern ecology.

Coastal accommodation has a different purpose. Diani Beach, Watamu, Malindi and Lamu each provide a different combination of beach, marine activities, cultural history and access. 5 Nights Diani Beach Retreat is appropriate when the traveller wants the coast to be the main holiday rather than a short extension. For a broader safari-and-beach journey, the 12-Day Safari & Beach Leisure provides a longer transition from wildlife to the Indian Ocean.

Transport

Road Safaris, Bush Flights & Efficient Routing

A good itinerary treats distance as part of the product. The goal is to move between destinations without sacrificing the wildlife time you are paying for.

🚙Road-Based Packages

Road travel works particularly well when destinations sit within the same regional corridor. Nairobi can connect with the Great Rift Valley, Amboseli and the southern parks; Tsavo connects naturally with the coastal route. A 4×4 safari vehicle also provides flexibility for game drives and stops that would not be possible on a fixed public transport schedule.

✈️Light-Aircraft Connections

Air travel becomes valuable when road distance would consume a significant part of the holiday. The signature Masai Mara–Diani route uses a bush-flight connection so the traveller can move from safari country to the coast without spending most of a day on the road. Bush flights normally impose luggage restrictions, so baggage should be confirmed before departure.

🗺️Route Geography Matters

Kenya safari packages are strongest when their sequence follows geography. Nairobi → Lake Naivasha → Lake Nakuru → Masai Mara is a logical Rift Valley-to-west route. Nairobi → Amboseli → Tsavo → Diani follows a different southern route. Samburu and Ol Pejeta fit naturally into a northern Kenya journey. Forcing all of these destinations into a short itinerary creates long transfer days and reduces the value of the safari itself.

The Safari Day

What Happens During a Kenya Safari Package?

A typical game-drive day starts early because wildlife is often active during cooler morning hours. The vehicle enters the park or reserve according to the applicable access rules, and the guide uses tracks, habitat, recent sightings and animal behaviour to determine where to search. The objective is not simply to drive until an animal appears; a skilled guide connects the animal to the landscape — water, prey, cover, breeding areas, seasonal movement and the time of day.

Midday is usually a lower-activity period. Many packages return to the lodge or camp for breakfast, lunch and rest, particularly in hot conditions. The afternoon game drive then resumes when temperatures fall. Some destinations and conservancies permit additional activities such as guided walks, night drives or balloon flights, but these are controlled by local rules and operators and should be treated as separate components when comparing package inclusions.

The vehicle is part of the safari experience. A pop-up-roof 4×4 allows standing or elevated viewing and gives photographers a stable position from which to work. The number of passengers matters because a full vehicle has less flexibility for positioning and photography. If wildlife photography is the primary objective, ask whether the itinerary is private, shared, or designed around a particular photography requirement.

Wildlife sightings are never contractual. A package can place you in the right ecosystem during a strong season, but individual animals move continuously. This is why multiple game drives matter. Two or three viewing periods provide more opportunities to encounter different habitats, species and behaviours than a single long drive built around one hoped-for sighting.

Arrival Planning

Starting Your Kenya Safari From Nairobi

Many international travellers enter Kenya through Nairobi, so arrival time should be treated as part of the itinerary rather than an afterthought.

Arrive and Safari the Same Day

This can work when the international flight lands early enough and the first destination is geographically close. Nairobi National Park is the simplest example because it is close to the capital. For a multi-day safari, however, building in a night or a realistic arrival buffer can protect the itinerary from flight delays and baggage issues.

Use Nairobi as a Gateway

Nairobi can be the starting point for the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, Samburu, Ol Pejeta and other regions. The correct first destination depends on the overall route. A package that begins with a southern park and finishes in the Mara may require a different transport sequence from one that begins in the Mara and finishes at Diani.

International Departure

On the final day, allow enough time to reach the departure airport. A coast-to-Nairobi flight is often more efficient than a long road return, but the flight schedule and international departure time must be checked together. A safari package should never be judged only by the number of nights; the first and last travel days determine how much usable safari time the traveller actually receives.

Travel Documents

Foreign visitors should arrange the applicable Kenya entry authorisation before travel. Use the Kenya eTA and visa guide for the current application process, then keep passport and booking details accessible throughout the trip.

Traveller Profiles

Family, Couple, Solo & Private Safari Planning

Families: choose the itinerary according to children’s ages, tolerance for road travel and the rules of the individual accommodation and activities. Amboseli and Tsavo can be practical southern choices because they can be incorporated without the same long northern transfer distances. The family safari service can be used when the standard package needs age-specific changes.

Couples and honeymooners: the best package is usually not the one with the greatest number of destinations. A honeymoon benefits from a deliberate change of pace: several strong wildlife days followed by private accommodation and beach time. The honeymoon safari service can adapt a standard route with room upgrades, private transfers, additional nights and coastal stays.

Solo travellers: the main pricing issue is accommodation and vehicle allocation. A package quoted on double occupancy may require a single supplement. Solo guests should also decide whether they value private vehicle flexibility or lower per-person cost through shared arrangements.

Private safari travellers: a private vehicle allows the guide to adjust the day around the group’s interests. Photographers can spend longer at suitable sightings, families can change the pace, and couples can combine game drives with other activities. Private travel can cost more because the vehicle and guide cost is distributed across fewer people, so the decision should be based on the value of flexibility rather than the label alone.

Build the Route

Best Kenya Safari Package Combinations

Each combination below solves a different travel objective. The correct route depends on geography, season and the amount of time available.

Masai Mara + Diani

The classic safari-and-beach combination. The Mara supplies Big Five and predator viewing; Diani supplies swimming, marine activities and rest. The 7-Day Masai Mara–Diani Bush & Beach is the direct product match.

Amboseli + Tsavo + Coast

This southern route links elephant-rich Amboseli, the large Tsavo ecosystem and the Indian Ocean. It is efficient for travellers who want wildlife diversity without travelling north to the Mara and then returning south.

Nairobi + Rift Valley + Mara

Start in Nairobi, move through Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru, then continue to the Masai Mara. This route adds freshwater lake, birding and rhino environments before the open savannah of the Mara.

Samburu + Ol Pejeta

Northern Kenya is the choice for travellers who want arid-adapted wildlife and conservation experiences. Samburu provides the Special Five; Ol Pejeta adds rhino conservation and a different Laikipia landscape.

Mara + Serengeti

The Kenya–Tanzania combination follows the ecological relationship between the Masai Mara and Serengeti. It is especially relevant to migration-focused travellers who want to experience both sides of the international border.

Safari + Long Beach Stay

For travellers who prefer a slower holiday, add several nights at Diani, Watamu, Malindi or Lamu after the wildlife portion. The coast then functions as a second destination rather than merely a departure point.

Specialist Interests

Choose a Package Around What You Want to See

Wildlife photography: prioritise destinations with open viewing, strong morning and evening light, and enough game-drive time. Amboseli’s elephants against Mount Kilimanjaro, Tsavo’s red-dust elephants and the Mara’s predators produce different photographic subjects. A private vehicle is useful when a photographer needs time at one sighting rather than following a shared group’s schedule.

Birding: the Rift Valley lakes and wetland habitats should be considered alongside the classic savannah parks. The Rift Valley Lakes Circuit gives more weight to lake environments, while Lake Nakuru adds a strong rhino and waterbird component. Bird populations are seasonal and water levels influence which species are present, so a birding itinerary should be timed around the target species rather than around a generic peak season.

Conservation: Ol Pejeta offers a strong conservation-focused component, while the Maasai Mara conservancies demonstrate the relationship between wildlife tourism and community land management. The Ol Pejeta Northern White Rhino Visit can be incorporated into a northern itinerary.

Culture: a safari does not need to stop at wildlife viewing. A Maasai Cultural Village Immersion adds a community-hosted experience focused on homestead life, beadwork and cultural practices. Cultural visits should be booked as hosted experiences with clear expectations rather than presented as a generic photo stop.

Adventure: travellers who want physical activity can add Hell’s Gate cycling and hiking, Mount Kenya trekking or other activity-led experiences. Mount Kenya Trekking Expedition is a different proposition from a conventional game-drive safari and should be selected when trekking itself is a major objective.

Seasonal Selection

Match the Kenya Safari Package to the Season

January–February: dry conditions generally make this a strong period for wildlife viewing across many parks. Water-dependent animals can be concentrated around reliable sources, and the Mara remains a resident-wildlife destination even outside migration months. Amboseli, Tsavo and the Mara can all work, depending on the traveller’s objective.

March–May: the long rains change the appearance of the landscape and can affect road conditions. The trade-off can be greener scenery, fewer visitors and different photographic conditions. A package should be selected with realistic transfer times and flexibility rather than a rigid schedule that assumes every road remains in identical condition.

June–October: this is a major safari period, particularly because the wildebeest migration reaches the Masai Mara during part of this window. Dry-season wildlife viewing is also strong in many southern parks. Demand can increase, so accommodation and flight planning should be started earlier for popular dates.

November–December: short rains can refresh the landscape and create changing light. The migration is normally no longer the main Mara objective, but resident wildlife remains. December festive travel can be busy and should be booked early.

For the full national picture, use the best time to visit Kenya guide. The most useful question is not simply “what is the best month?” but “which month best matches the wildlife, landscape, activity and budget priorities of this itinerary?”

Responsible Safari

What a Responsible Kenya Safari Should Protect

Kenya’s safari economy depends on functioning ecosystems and communities living around protected areas. A package therefore has a relationship with more than the traveller and the operator. Park entry fees contribute to protected-area management; accommodation employs local staff; guides and drivers depend on tourism; conservancy tourism can provide revenue to landowners; and community experiences create a direct economic relationship between visitors and hosts.

Wildlife viewing should follow distance and vehicle rules. Guides should not pressure animals for photographs, block roads unnecessarily, or create unsafe crowding around sightings. Visitors should avoid feeding wildlife, removing natural objects, leaving waste and treating community visits as staged performances without consent.

Responsible travel also means choosing an itinerary whose transport demands are realistic. A package that spends most of its time moving between distant parks can consume more time and fuel while giving the traveller less wildlife time. Efficient geographic sequencing is therefore both a practical planning decision and a more sensible use of the safari infrastructure.

Before Departure

Practical Details to Confirm Before Booking

Park & Reserve Fees

Confirm whether the quotation includes the applicable entry fees for every protected area on the route. Fees can be a substantial part of safari cost and should be compared on a like-for-like basis.

Accommodation Basis

Check the room or tent category, meal plan, number of nights, sharing basis and whether accommodation is inside the protected area, in a conservancy or outside the boundary.

Vehicle Arrangement

Ask whether the safari vehicle is private or shared, how many travellers it carries and whether the itinerary uses a 4×4 vehicle suitable for the terrain and wildlife viewing.

Internal Flights

Where a package uses a bush flight, confirm the flight route, departure timing, baggage allowance and transfer connection. Soft luggage is commonly more practical for small aircraft.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance should cover the activities and destinations on the itinerary, including medical emergencies, cancellation and relevant transport disruption. Review the policy before departure.

What to Pack

Use the Kenya safari packing guide for clothing layers, footwear, sun protection, camera equipment and baggage planning for road and bush-flight itineraries.

Decision Guide

Choose the Package by One Clear Priority

If two itineraries look similar, identify the outcome that matters most and let that determine the route.

🐘Elephants + Mountain

Choose the 3-Day Amboseli National Park package or the Amboseli Elephant Safari with Kilimanjaro Views.

🦁Predators + Migration

Choose a 3-Day Maasai Mara Classic for a short stay or the Migration Special when the trip is specifically built around the migration season.

🐘Red Elephants + Short Trip

Choose the 2-Day Tsavo East Safari when time is limited, or the Tsavo East & West Red Elephants Safari when you want both sides of the Tsavo ecosystem.

🏖️Safari + Beach

Choose the 7-Day Bush & Beach for a compact Mara-to-Diani route, or the 12-Day Safari & Beach Leisure for more time on both sides of the holiday.

🦏Rhino + Conservation

Consider Lake Nakuru and Ol Pejeta Conservancy when rhino viewing and conservation are more important than a conventional predator-focused safari.

🌍Maximum Kenya Variety

Use the 14-Day Grand Kenya Circuit when the purpose is to experience northern Kenya, Rift Valley landscapes, southern safari country and the coast in one extended trip.

The Signature

Our Flagship: the 7-Day Bush & Beach

One itinerary defines what Sun & Safari does better than anyone — the seamless week that pairs the Masai Mara with Diani Beach.

★ Signature Itinerary

7 Days Bush & Beach — Masai Mara to Diani

Four nights of Big Five game drives in the Masai Mara National Reserve, then a bush flight south to three nights of white sand and reef-calm water at Diani Beach on the Indian Ocean. Every flight, transfer, park fee, and meal is sequenced into a single booking, moving you from the open grassland of the Mara Triangle to the coral reef and dhow-sailed shoreline south of Mombasa without a single logistics gap.

Per person · double occupancy — see full pricing on the itinerary page

The Masai Mara half of this itinerary sits on the northern extension of Tanzania’s Serengeti ecosystem, separated only by an international border that the wildlife itself ignores. This is the terrain crossed by the wildebeest and zebra herds during the Great Migration, and it is home to a resident population of lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, and buffalo year-round, independent of the migration calendar. The Diani Beach half trades savannah for the Indian Ocean coast: a fringing coral reef roughly a kilometre offshore creates calm, shallow lagoons ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and stand-up paddling, while the mainland behind the beach still carries fragments of coastal forest and the Shimba Hills further inland. Travellers who want a shorter version of the same bush-to-beach logic can look at our 5-nights Diani Beach retreat as a standalone add-on to any of the core safari packages below.

Core Safari Packages

Kenya’s Big Three Parks: Tsavo, Amboseli & the Mara

Three fixed itineraries cover the parks most first-time visitors ask for by name. Each one extends naturally into a beach stay or a longer circuit — the links below each card lead to the full itinerary and the matching product listing.

2 Days Tsavo East Safari

Per Person · Double Occupancy

Tsavo East National Park is Kenya’s largest national park and the closest major safari destination to Nairobi and the coast, which is why it works so well as a short add-on rather than a standalone trip. It is known for the “red elephants” that dust-bathe in Tsavo’s iron-rich soil, for the Galana River, and for Lugard Falls and the Yatta Plateau, the world’s longest lava flow.

  • Park fees & all game drives
  • Full-board lodge accommodation
  • 4×4 safari vehicle & expert guide
  • Personal travel consultant
  • Ideal add-on to a coast holiday
★ Most Popular

3 Days Amboseli National Park

Per Person · Double Occupancy

Amboseli National Park sits directly beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, and on clear mornings the mountain’s snow cap frames every game drive photograph. Amboseli is best known for its large, free-ranging elephant herds and for the swamps fed by underground rivers off Kilimanjaro itself, which keep the park green even in dry season.

  • Park fees & all game drives
  • Kilimanjaro-view lodge, full board
  • 4×4 safari vehicle & expert guide
  • Personal travel consultant
  • Extends overland to Tsavo & coast

3 Days Maasai Mara Classic

Per Person · Double Occupancy

The Masai Mara National Reserve is Kenya’s best-known wildlife destination and the country’s portion of the wider Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. It has the country’s highest density of predators and, during the migration months, hosts the Mara River wildebeest crossings that anchor most Kenya safari itineraries built around July through October.

  • Park fees & all game drives
  • Full-board tented camp
  • 4×4 safari vehicle & expert guide
  • Personal travel consultant
  • Migration-season departures (Jul–Oct)

These three parks are usually the first names a first-time visitor searches for, and each answers a slightly different question. Tsavo East answers “what’s close and easy,” since it sits almost on the Nairobi–Mombasa road corridor. Amboseli answers “where can I photograph elephants against Kilimanjaro,” a shot that exists nowhere else in Kenya at this scale. The Masai Mara answers “where is the wildlife densest,” particularly for lion, leopard, and cheetah sightings outside of migration season, and for the river crossings themselves between roughly July and October. None of the three is objectively “better” than the others — they are different entities solving different traveller intents, which is exactly why most of our longer circuits below combine two or three of them rather than picking one.

Multi-Region Itineraries

Longer Circuits: North, South & Cross-Border

For travellers with more time, these itineraries connect two, three, or more of Kenya’s regions — the northern conservancies, the Rift Valley lakes, the southern parks, the coast, and in one case the Tanzanian border — into a single continuous route.

10-Day Grand Kenya Safari

A full loop through Kenya’s central and southern parks, built for travellers who want the Masai Mara, Amboseli, and Lake Nakuru or Naivasha in one trip without a coastal extension. It is the itinerary we recommend most often to guests who have exactly one long holiday to spend on a first visit to Kenya and want breadth across ecosystems rather than depth in a single park.

Full 10-Day Itinerary →

5-Day Northern Kenya Safari

Northern Kenya is a different ecosystem from the south: drier, more arid-adapted, and home to species the southern parks do not have. This route centres on Samburu National Reserve and the Laikipia conservancies around Ol Pejeta, reachable by light aircraft from Nairobi in under an hour.

Full 5-Day Itinerary →

14-Day Grand Kenya Circuit: North to Coast

Our longest single circuit, linking the northern conservancies to the southern parks and finishing on the coast. It is designed around the idea that Kenya is not one landscape but several — semi-arid north, Rift Valley lakes, savannah south, and Indian Ocean shoreline — and that two weeks is roughly what it takes to experience all four without rushing any of them.

Full 14-Day Itinerary →

12-Day Safari & Beach Leisure, Full Kenya

A twelve-day balance of game drives and rest days, weighting the itinerary more evenly between safari parks and the coast than the signature 7-day route does. It suits travellers who want the Masai Mara or Amboseli in full plus multiple unhurried nights at Diani Beach or Watamu, rather than a brief beach coda at the end of a bush-heavy week.

Full 12-Day Itinerary →

Kenya–Tanzania Combo: Mara & Serengeti

The Masai Mara and the Serengeti are one continuous ecosystem split by a political border, and this itinerary crosses that border deliberately — pairing Kenya’s Mara with Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park so the migration or resident wildlife can be viewed from both sides of the same landscape in a single trip.

Full Combo Itinerary →

Migration Special

A season-specific itinerary timed to the wildebeest migration’s presence in the Masai Mara, roughly July through October, and built around maximising nights near the Mara River crossing points rather than spreading time across multiple parks. See our Great Migration guide for how the calendar drives this timing.

Full Migration Itinerary →

5-Day Rift Valley Lakes Circuit

The Great Rift Valley’s lake chain — Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru in particular — offers a different kind of safari from the savannah parks: boat safaris, walking safaris on Crescent Island, and dense flamingo and rhino populations, all within a few hours’ drive of Nairobi.

Full 5-Day Itinerary →

5 Nights Diani Beach Retreat

A coast-only itinerary for travellers who want the Indian Ocean without a preceding safari — or who are adding beach nights onto a safari booked separately. Built around Diani Beach‘s reef-protected lagoon, with optional day trips south toward the Shimba Hills.

Full 5-Night Retreat →

The Kenyan Coast

Beach Extensions: Diani, Watamu, Malindi & Lamu

Kenya’s coastline runs roughly 500km from the Tanzanian border to Somalia, and each stretch has a distinct character. These are the four coastal towns our packages build around.

Diani Beach, south of Mombasa, is the most developed of the four and the default choice for the beach half of a bush-and-beach itinerary — its lagoon is sheltered by an offshore reef, which keeps the water calm enough for swimming at almost any tide. Our Diani Beach Coastal Getaway is the standalone version of this stay. Watamu, further north near Malindi, centres on a protected marine national park with some of the clearest snorkelling water on the coast and a seasonal population of nesting sea turtles, covered by our Watamu Marine Park snorkelling and turtle experience. Malindi carries a longer written history than either — it was a Swahili trading town centuries before Mombasa’s rise, and its Old Town and Vasco da Gama Pillar reflect Portuguese and Swahili-Arab layers of the same coastline. Lamu, the northernmost of the four, is a UNESCO World Heritage archipelago reachable by boat or small plane, with a car-free Old Town, dhow-building traditions still practised today, and Swahili architecture largely unchanged for centuries — the setting for our Lamu Archipelago cultural escape.

Mombasa itself, Kenya’s second city and main coastal gateway, is covered separately by our Swahili Coast Mombasa Old Town cultural tour, which visits Fort Jesus and the old town’s narrow streets rather than the beach resorts further south — useful as a half-day add-on for travellers flying in or out through Moi International Airport.

Not every place worth visiting needs a multi-day package built around it. These shorter experiences slot into a longer itinerary, a Nairobi layover, or a rest day between parks.

Nairobi City National Park Day Tour

Nairobi National Park is the only national park in the world bordering a capital city’s skyline, making it the easiest way to see lion, rhino, and giraffe on a layover between international flights.

Wildlife

The Big Five, the Special Five & What You’ll Actually See

Different parks are built around different species groupings. Knowing which one matters to you narrows the choice of package fast.

The “Big Five” — lion, leopard, African elephant, African buffalo, and rhinoceros (both black and white species occur in Kenya) — is a hunting-era term that has become the standard shorthand for a complete safari sighting list. The Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo, Lake Nakuru, and Ol Pejeta each host all five, though rhino sightings are most reliable at Lake Nakuru and Ol Pejeta, where populations are more actively protected and, in Nakuru’s case, fenced. Our Kenya wildlife guide breaks down which species cluster in which ecosystem in more detail than fits on this page.

Samburu National Reserve, further north, is built around an entirely different list: the Samburu Special Five, made up of species adapted to arid terrain that either do not exist or are rare in the southern parks — Grevy’s zebra (distinguished from the common plains zebra by its narrower stripes and larger, rounder ears), reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk (a long-necked antelope that browses standing on its hind legs), and Beisa oryx. A traveller whose main interest is completing a Big Five list should prioritise the Mara, Amboseli, or Tsavo; a traveller who has already done a Big Five safari and wants species diversity should look north toward Samburu instead.

Elephant behaviour also varies meaningfully by park, which is worth knowing before booking. Amboseli’s herds are known for their unusually large tusks and for being some of the most habituated to vehicles in Kenya, a result of decades of continuous research by the Amboseli Trust for Elephants. Tsavo’s elephants, by contrast, are famous for their reddish colour, caused by dust-bathing in the park’s iron-oxide-rich soil rather than any difference in the animals themselves.

The Great Migration

Understanding the Wildebeest Migration

The single event that drives more Kenya safari bookings than any other.

The Great Migration is the annual, circular movement of roughly two million wildebeest, alongside several hundred thousand zebra and gazelle, following seasonal rainfall between Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve. The herds are in the Mara, on the Kenyan side of the border, for roughly July through October each year, which is why that window defines “migration season” pricing and demand across the entire Kenyan safari industry — not just at Sun & Safari. Our Great Migration guide and dedicated Migration Special package are both built around this specific window.

The migration’s most photographed moment is the Mara River crossing, where herds must cross a river containing large Nile crocodile populations to reach fresh grazing on the far bank — an event that happens repeatedly and somewhat unpredictably throughout the season rather than on a fixed date, which is why multi-night stays near the river improve the odds of witnessing one over a single day trip. Because the ecosystem straddles a national border, travellers wanting to see both the Kenyan and Tanzanian sides of the same migration in one trip typically book our Kenya–Tanzania Mara–Serengeti combo rather than treating them as two separate holidays.

Seasons

When to Go: Kenya’s Safari Seasons

Kenya’s safari calendar splits into three broad bands, covered in full in our best time to visit Kenya guide. Peak season runs roughly July through October, driven by the Great Migration’s presence in the Masai Mara, plus the December festive weeks; this is when lodges, camps, and flights are busiest and should be booked furthest in advance. High season, January and February, is dry, warm, and reliable for game viewing across the southern parks without migration-level crowds. Green season, roughly March through May, brings the long rains — dramatic skies, dramatically lower visitor numbers, lush landscapes, and newborn wildlife across most parks, at the cost of some muddy roads and shorter viewing windows on the wettest days.

Coastal seasons run on a slightly different calendar to the inland parks, since they follow the Indian Ocean monsoon system rather than the East African rains directly — worth checking separately if you are combining a Masai Mara or Amboseli safari with time at Diani, Watamu, or Lamu.

Entry Requirements

The Kenya eTA: What Every Traveller Needs

Kenya requires almost all foreign visitors to hold an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before arrival, applied for online and linked to your passport rather than stamped or stickered into it on arrival. Processing typically takes a few days, so it should be arranged well ahead of your safari dates rather than at the airport. Our Kenya eTA and visa guide walks through the application itself, required documents, and common rejection reasons step by step; it is worth reading before, not after, you book flights.

Packing

What to Pack for a Kenya Safari

Safari packing has its own logic, shaped by early-morning game drives that start cold and end hot, dusty vehicle interiors, and — on any itinerary that includes an internal flight, such as the Masai Mara to Diani Beach route — strict luggage weight limits on light aircraft. Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, stone) is standard advice for a reason: it shows dust less and doesn’t attract insects the way bright colours or pure white can. Our full what to pack for safari guide covers layering for dawn game drives, the specific luggage restrictions on bush flights, and the difference in packing between an inland safari and a coastal extension at Diani, Watamu, or Lamu.

Who Is This For

Family Safaris & Honeymoon Safaris

Family Safaris

Travelling with children changes several practical decisions: which parks have age restrictions on walking safaris and balloon flights, which camps accept younger children at all, and how to structure driving distances so days don’t run too long for a child’s attention span. Amboseli and Tsavo East, both shorter-drive parks close to Nairobi and the coast, tend to suit families better than longer northern circuits. See our dedicated family safaris service page for age-specific guidance.

Honeymoon Safaris

The 7-day Bush & Beach signature itinerary was built with honeymooners specifically in mind — a genuine safari in the Masai Mara followed by uninterrupted beach time at Diani, rather than a compressed single-destination trip. Private tented camps, sundowner game drives, and beachfront rooms can all be arranged through our honeymoon safari service page.

Beyond the Reserve Boundary

The Maasai Mara Conservancies

The Masai Mara National Reserve is bordered by a network of private and community-run conservancies — land leased directly from Maasai landowners and managed with lower vehicle density limits than the reserve itself allows. Staying in a conservancy rather than inside the reserve trades a small amount of proximity to the most famous river-crossing points for a quieter, less crowded, and often more flexible safari experience, including night drives and walking safaris that the main reserve doesn’t permit. Our Maasai Mara conservancies guide compares the individual conservancies by name and explains how to choose between a reserve-based and conservancy-based Masai Mara safari package.

Further Reading

The Rift Valley Lakes & the Aberdare Highlands

The Great Rift Valley cuts through central Kenya and holds a chain of lakes with sharply different characters within a short drive of each other and of Nairobi. Lake Naivasha is freshwater, supports a resident hippo population, and is the base for the Crescent Island walking safari described above; our Lake Naivasha guide covers boat operators and viewpoints in detail. Lake Nakuru, by contrast, is alkaline, fenced as a rhino sanctuary, and known for its flamingo populations, which fluctuate year to year with the lake’s water chemistry.

The Aberdare range sits apart from both — a forested, high-altitude ecosystem more associated with dense bamboo forest, waterfalls, and treetop lodges than with open savannah game drives, and the setting for our Aberdare Treetops Lodge safari above.

Booking & Payment

How Does Booking a Package Work?

Three facts our guests most want confirmed before they commit — full terms are in our booking conditions.

Deposit First, Balance Later

A deposit confirms your lodges and flights; the balance falls due before travel. Flexible instalment plans are available on request — many guests spread payments over several months.

Rates Are Per Person, Double Occupancy

Every itinerary assumes two people sharing a room or tent. Solo travellers add a single supplement; families with children sharing receive child rates.

Every Package Is Customisable

These are starting points, not boxes. Add beach nights, upgrade lodges, insert a balloon safari, or merge two packages — your travel consultant re-quotes the whole itinerary transparently.

Common Questions

Kenya Safari Package FAQ

Direct answers about parks, seasons, logistics, and value.

National parks, such as Amboseli, Tsavo East and West, Lake Nakuru, and Nairobi National Park, are managed directly by the Kenya Wildlife Service under national conservation law. National reserves, such as the Masai Mara and Samburu, are managed by county governments and generally allow more accommodation flexibility inside their boundaries. Conservancies, such as those bordering the Mara and Ol Pejeta in Laikipia, are private or community land leased from local landowners and run to lower vehicle-density standards than either parks or reserves. See our Maasai Mara conservancies guide for a direct comparison.

It depends on what you want to see. The Masai Mara has the highest predator density and, from roughly July to October, the Great Migration. Amboseli has the Kilimanjaro backdrop and Kenya’s most habituated elephant herds. Tsavo East is the closest major park to Nairobi and the coast, making it the easiest single add-on to a beach holiday. If species diversity beyond the Big Five matters more than any single park’s reputation, Samburu in the north offers an entirely different wildlife list.

Yes — combining is the norm, not the exception. The most requested merge is Amboseli plus Tsavo East, which flows overland toward the coast, finished with beach nights at Diani. Travellers wanting the full range often book our 10-day Grand Kenya Safari or 14-day Grand Kenya Circuit instead of assembling shorter packages themselves. Your consultant sequences the parks in the most efficient order and removes any duplicated transfer costs from the combined itinerary.

The wildebeest and zebra herds are typically present in the Masai Mara from roughly July through October each year, having moved north from Tanzania’s Serengeti in search of grazing. River crossings at the Mara River happen repeatedly through this window rather than on a single fixed date. Our Great Migration guide and Migration Special package are both built specifically around this timing.

Almost all foreign visitors need an approved Kenya eTA before arrival, applied for online in advance rather than obtained on landing. Processing generally takes a few days. Full instructions, required documents, and common pitfalls are covered in our Kenya eTA and visa guide.

Yes. Every package and product on this page includes the national park and reserve entry fees for the itinerary as shown. Park fees are a significant cost and the single most common hidden extra in the safari industry — excluding them is how some advertised itineraries appear cheaper than they end up being. We quote them in from the start.

Our signature 7-Day Bush & Beach itinerary links the Masai Mara directly to Diani Beach by light aircraft, avoiding a long road transfer. For a more coast-weighted trip, the 12-Day Safari & Beach Leisure itinerary allocates more nights to the coast. If your safari and beach dates don’t align neatly, the 5-Nights Diani Beach Retreat can be booked as a standalone add-on either before or after a safari arranged separately.

Yes, with some route planning. Shorter-drive parks like Amboseli and Tsavo East tend to suit children better than long northern circuits, since travel days stay shorter. Some activities, such as walking safaris and hot-air balloon flights, carry minimum age requirements at specific camps or operators. Our family safaris page covers age-specific guidance park by park.

Neutral-coloured, layered clothing for cold dawn game drives that warm up quickly, plus attention to strict luggage weight limits on any itinerary involving a light-aircraft transfer, such as Masai Mara to Diani Beach. Our full what to pack for safari guide covers this in detail, including the difference between packing for an inland safari and a coastal extension.

The reserve itself allows higher vehicle numbers per sighting and sits closest to the most famous river-crossing points. The surrounding conservancies — private and community-run land leased from Maasai landowners — limit vehicle density more strictly and permit activities like night drives and walking safaris that the reserve does not. Our conservancies guide compares them by name.

Yes. The Masai Mara and the Serengeti are one continuous ecosystem divided only by a national border. Our Kenya–Tanzania Combo: Mara & Serengeti is built specifically to cross that border within a single itinerary rather than treating the two countries as separate trips.

Yes. After the confirmation deposit, most guests split the balance into monthly instalments, with the final payment due before travel. There is no surcharge for paying in instalments. Your consultant sets the schedule with you when you confirm — see our booking conditions and refund policy for the full terms.

Cost differences between operators in Kenya usually trace to four things: vehicle quality and sharing, guide experience, lodge standard, and whether park fees are genuinely included from the start. Our Tsavo East package is less expensive than our Masai Mara package because Tsavo’s park fees and lodge rates are genuinely lower — not because anything has been stripped out of the itinerary. If a competing quote looks unusually low, check those four items line by line before comparing.
