Why the Mara

The Reserve That Defines the African Safari

The Masai Mara National Reserve in southwestern Kenya forms the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem along the Tanzanian border. Its short-grass plains, riverine forests, and rolling escarpments support extraordinary wildlife density at any time of year — resident lion prides, cheetah on the open plains, leopard along the Talek and Sand rivers, and elephant, buffalo, and rhino across the reserve.

Between late July and October, an estimated 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebra, and 200,000 Thomson’s gazelle pour in from the Serengeti — and the Mara River crossings become the most dramatic recurring wildlife spectacle on earth. Around the reserve, private conservancies offer quieter game viewing, night drives, and walking safaris while channelling revenue to Maasai landowners.

Signature Experiences

What You’ll Do in the Mara

Every Sun & Safari Mara itinerary combines several of these — tell us which excite you most.

Dawn & Dusk Game Drives

Twice-daily drives with expert naturalist guides timed for the golden hours when lions hunt, cheetah scan the plains, and the light turns everything to fire.

Migration River Crossings

From late July through September, position at the Mara River as wildebeest herds brave crocodile-patrolled water — the most viscerally thrilling moment in African wildlife.

Hot-Air Balloon Safari

Lift off before dawn and drift silently over herds and rivers, landing to a champagne bush breakfast on the plains. The Mara’s single most requested add-on.

Guided Bush Walks

Walk the conservancies with an armed ranger and Maasai guide, reading tracks, plants, and birdlife at a pace no vehicle allows.

Maasai Community Visits

Visit a manyatta with a community elder — cattle culture, beadwork, and the living traditions of the people the Mara is named for.

Sundowners on the Ridge

End each day the classic way: a drink on an escarpment overlooking the plains as the sun drops behind the Oloololo hills.

Timing Your Visit

When to Visit the Masai Mara

The Mara delivers year-round — but each season offers something different. Migration-window camps book out 12–18 months ahead.

SeasonWhat to ExpectVerdict
Jan – Feb Hot, dry, and green after the short rains. Superb resident game viewing, calving season on the plains, low visitor numbers. Excellent
Mar – May The long rains. Dramatic skies, lush landscapes, newborn wildlife, and the year’s lowest lodge rates. Some black-cotton tracks get muddy. Best Value
Jun Dry season begins; grass shortens and game concentrates. A quiet, beautiful shoulder month before the migration arrives. Very Good
Jul – Oct The Great Migration fills the reserve; river crossings peak late July–September. Peak rates, peak demand — book far ahead. Peak Season
Nov – Dec Short rains bring brief afternoon showers that clear quickly. Migration herds head south; resident game remains superb and rates soften. Very Good

Logistics

Getting There — and On to the Beach

We handle every leg. Here are the two ways in, and the classic way onward.

By Air (Recommended)

A scheduled 45-minute bush flight from Nairobi Wilson Airport lands you at one of the Mara’s airstrips, with your first game drive often starting on the way to camp. Luggage limit: 15 kg in soft bags.

By Road

A 5–6 hour scenic drive from Nairobi through the Great Rift Valley in a 4×4 safari vehicle. Lower cost, and the descent past the Rift viewpoints is an experience in its own right.

Onward to the Coast

The signature Sun & Safari move: a morning game drive, a bush flight back to Wilson, and a connecting flight to Diani (Ukunda) or Mombasa — savannah to sea in under three hours, door to door. See our Kenya Coast guide for where to land.
